Kinja'd!!!

Fixing some odds and ends that comes with the territory of owning a 22 yr old car.

Kinja'd!!!

The first offender is the power steering reservoir pump. It’s a slow enough leak that I could probably look the other way but I literally had nothing going on today, so I guess I’ll give it the old college try. Who cares if it’s below freezing outside.

Kinja'd!!!

The right one is the offending unit. I could by a remanufactured pump with reservoir for roughly $30 not including the refundable core charge on Rockauto...which is pretty darn cheap.

Now I figured I can do one better by scavenging a half-way decent one from my local junkyard for pennies on the dollar. I got one from a 2001 Cavalier for $29 out the door. Total savings...$1 + 120,000 miles of wear and tear. I still got it.

The fuel rail return hard line is my other issue that I plan to lay to rest. It leaks a drop every 2-3 seconds when the car is running...not enough for fiery death but just enough to make my car smelly. I run a tight ship so let’s see what the issue is.

Kinja'd!!!

Turns out it was a pesky O-ring that mutilated itself. Well that’s an easy fix.

Kinja'd!!!

I bought one of those universal Dorman O-ring variety kits for $3, slapped on a new O-ring and buttoned her right up. Fuel leaking won’t be an issue.

Next on my list is replacing the exhaust manifold gasket.

Kinja'd!!!

You can see how rubbish the original factory one is at this point. Easy swap in and I just feel better afterwards.

Kinja'd!!!

Another day, another dollar I’d say! My work here is done and my car is done puking fluids for the meantime.

As a bonus, here’s photos from the Chicago Auto Show I went to on Sunday:

You’re a better person than I. Once it gets cold I pretty much hang up the socket wrench until spring.  I think the most I’ve done is spent 10 minutes replacing a fuel pressure sensor.

E xistence is pain when it’s freezing outside. I just dress in a bazillion layers and take a lot of breaks to defrost. I have a new steering rack I want to put in but I’m in ZERO rush to get that done until it gets much much warmer.

No problem.

The SCCA Milwaukee has taken over running the Rallycross events at Byron this year. First one will be March 28.

In WI as long as it’s above 20 degrees it’s warm. Might as well go get shit done.
